Battleton Brook Open Space

The lower reaches of Battleton Brook, shortly before it flows into the River Avon, run through a natural floodplain. Managed by Evesham Town Council, the brook floodplain is being sensitively enhanced as a nature reserve right in the heart of Evesham.

The work has included planting nearly a hundred additional trees, along with native wildflowers to provide food and cover for pollinators. Other work has included the creation of still water bays along the brook in which wetland plants can flourish, “bee banks” for solitary bees, a hibernaculum for amphibians and reptiles in winter, and log piles which are a refuge for insects and hegehogs.  Bird boxes and bat boxes have been installed in the trees, and information boards and benches placed for the benefit of our human visitors.

The enhancement work has been supported by Wychavon District Council and Worcestershire Wildlife Trust Natural Networks. This is an ongoing project and more activity will be carried out both to monitor the effectiveness of work so far and further improve the biodiversity of the brook and floodplain.
